In parallel to our work as designers, we have been researching on the compositional and expressive possibilities of a seemingly simple material, but with a great use in recent architecture, such as the cement tile. It is a material that has constant parameters, such as its size of dimensions 20×20 cm. in its square version or its handmade way of manufacture, but other variables, such as its drawing (from the cast), its coloration, or its position in relation to the general composition.
It is in these variable parameters that we have focused the work. And the compositional possibilities are endless. Not only ordered or regular compositions, but also the possibility of irregular, heterogeneous, gradual compositions that can adapt to a space depending on the project: where does sunlight comes from? How is this space walked through? How is the furniture placed? It is in this sense of the adaptability in which this research is born, applicable to our projects, but also to those of other professionals who wants to experience with us.
In the project of the house Orue Albizuri we had the first opportunity to carry out the process of manufacturing the tile from a design of its own, and supervise it from the beginning to the end, from the design of the cast, the manufacture of prototypes, the revision of these, the choice of pigments, and the decision on placement. Starting from the same cast with two different colorations and two different ways of laying(though somehow classic) we have obtained two really different spaces, unique within the whole house. But the possibilities that arise from the mixture of colors and positions is much greater. And we believe that adaptable to any project with the expressive purpose that is desired.
But beyond this specific case, we continue working on new models and exploring possibilities.
